  1. One thing I loved as a kid growing up in the mid-80s and early 90s was merchandise. Video game merchandise, collectible little toys, clothes, they had everything! Here are just a few of my (sometimes guilty)favorites: Toys and PVC figures! Can't forget McDonald's toys! Cards(Topps always had the best! ) Panini sticker albums And clothes I'll leave you with a look back at the 1990 World of Nintendo Catalog.
  2. I wish I could beat Adventure of Lolo.. every time I try, I get stumped on a level along the way.
  3. I love the old artwork! Also, which Donald Duck issue was it?
  4. Random battles!!!! Just where the hell are these minions coming from?! They're endless AND invisible?! Not to mention they happen every few seconds on every world map of numerous RPGs. Only now is it becoming the trend to ACTUALLY SHOW THE DAMN ENEMIES so you can choose to fight or get the hell away from them. I ONLY WANTED TO PROGRESS THE STORY! Everyone should have taken example from Chrono Trigger and Earthbound, games which showed the enemies coming up to you. At least it's less annoying that way and you'll know you're about to fight a piece of crap enemy before heading into that final dungeon to finish the game!
  5. I'm glad we have a good, friendly discussion/debate on our hands! I don't think it's about bringing a new face to games, at all. It's just the fact that so many things about games are actually art, and the coming together of those factors into a game is another form of art in itself. There's not really much to be considered, people have their opinions on the subject, but by the definition of art games would be included. Books and movies are actually other examples of forms of art, whether anyone feels that they are or not. They are art by definition, which is above anyone's opinion. Here are some of the various definitions of art: The products of human creativity. The creation of beautiful or significant things. A superior skill that you can learn by study and practice and observation. Art is the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses or emotions. It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music, literature, film, sculpture, and paintings. Modern games bring together many of the stated mediums, be they the art direction(character/sprite/background art), the score/music, the writing and dialogue, cut-scene cinematography, or general direction and design of the game itself. Many smaller pieces of art come together in one final, finished larger piece of art. Of course, this isn't ALWAYS the case, but in most instances it actually is. The arts are activities such as music, painting, literature, cinema, and dance, which people can take part in for enjoyment(again, video games), or to create works which express serious meanings or ideas of beauty. Arts or art is used in the names of theatres or cinemas which show plays or films that are intended to make the audience think deeply about the content(certain games also do this), and not simply to entertain them. If you describe an activity as an art, you mean that it requires skill and that people learn to do it by instinct or experience, rather than by learning facts or rules. * Fishing is an art. * ...the unscientific arts of seduction and romance. * The art of mastering a video game. And so we have many examples.
  6. They don't really have to consider them art, as they are art by definition in many cases. This can't be changed by anyone's opinion.
  7. Eberk: 0 Areala: 1 What a beautiful game that was! I don't like his stance here just as much as I didn't like his initial stance on the movie Day of the Dead, which he, years later, revoked and disagreed with. The only difference this time is that he won't live anohter 20 years to revoke this statement after everyone has forgotten the argument. Bravo, Ebert, for once again being a pompous-arthouse-film ass. And to think I tolerated his existence there for a while.
  8. Video games are already considered art. I've heard about an arcade machine being put in an art museum somewhere. Or.. maybe that was just in my own twisted mind. Games are art on so many levels that its not even possible to make his point. Maybe Ebert should just stick to his art films since he's obviously never even played a game in his life.
  9. We took a vacation to Florida last August and it was excellent and a GREAT way to relax. Then we went to NYC for a few days in November to catch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. We didn't wake up in time for it, so we just ended up watching it on TV at my aunt's place. Have a good vacation Philly, it sounds like you really need it. Word of advice, though: Mexico is REALLY dangerous. Stick to main roads where there are a lot of people- don't stray. They will take anything they can from anyone- especially Americans. There are a lot of gangs and killings/kidnappings of tourists going on in the past few years. Didn't mean to be Debbie Downer but just be careful and have fun!! Congrats on paying off your debt too!
  10. I have always let the wrong people get close to my game systems. @!#?@! First, there was my original Sega Genesis. I lent it to the kid next door and it came bck with the microphone jack broken and something loose inside the console. Years later, my sister or brothers dug it out of my room and God knows where it is now.. Second to disappear were my Playstation games. FFVII, Gran Turismo 2, and a few others were stolen by my brothers and traded in at Gamestop for a few bucks towards a Yu-Gi-Oh game..... PISSED! Third was my N64 and all the good games I had gathered when N64 games were going out of style at Gamestop(I paid like $15 for each). I let my brothers keep it in their room, since technically the system was theirs. One day it went missing and I believe my mom's ex-boyfriend either sold it or took it for himself when he moved out, the prick. Same with my 2600! Lessons learned: 1. Don't let punks borrow your stuff! 2. If you have siblings, steps, or in-laws, keep your games under lock and key! 3. Keep record and close track on where your games are at all times!
  11. These guys are such jerks, they don't deserve all the money they make for just playing a game. Amen, Philly!
  12. I was reading an old article about that not too long ago. Never got to use it but it seemed like a really cool idea. Nowadays we have things like IMVU, which isn't nearly as creative as this seemed.
  13. I'm constantly in a state of remembrance. I don't know why, exactly, or how, but so many things every day spark memories from my past, many going back to when I was 2-4. Things that spark it are scents, doing things I used to, or pretending with my daughter. I guess this is yet another reason I love being on this site and talking about old stuff all the time. Also, randomly it seems, things pop into my head all day long. Things I haven't thought of for years. Wish I knew why this happened to me so much, I don't always like feeling like I live in the past. It's what my mind seems to choose, though. You would think since you lived all of those things before, watched all those TV shows, played all those games, that you could dip back into your memory and re-live it all again like it were happening, albeit maybe a bit cloudy. I haven't really tried deep meditation for it, but I think my constant calm mind state is a bit like meditation and maybe that's why I get so many memories flowing back all the time. My time travel fantasy was always to go back and tape all the old shows I loved so I could watch them again, or go back and buy games I love when they were new. Nothing that would change anyone else's life but my own too much. Nowadays its so possible that I guess I don't really have any need for a time machine anymore.
  14. Same as gblock, but also Quake Arena. I LOVED playing Quake with my friends, that stuff was crazy!! I don't see how many other characters they could add to MvC3, they have just about everybody you can think of and then some weird random ones.
  15. Diarrhea is even more interesting! I win already! *nyaah*
  16. Definitely. Give me a good old 6-Button Sega pad any day. I can remember paying $80+ sometimes for SNES carts. Imagine if games didn't get their prices capped(basically) a few years back.
  17. You could probably make a good few bucks on the manuals alone. People like to have complete games when they collect. Schloss, your name always makes me want to replay Gabriel Knight.
  18. This damn lady I buy games from at the local flea market got word of this and wants to raise her NES game prices now, even though she has nothing special. >.< This is crazy, I wonder if they actually paid or not.
  19. Yeah, my friend swears by his Madcatz. It is a lot like the Saturn controller, and that's what drew him in too. they prettymuch made it to be that way. I fully recommend buying one if you have the chance. I tried it after getting my stick and I can't do it very well anymore with just my thumb.
  20. How do you make the quotes that show the original posters name? All I know is [ quote ]. Sorry, still fairly new to this forum stuff, and it doesn't help that they're all different.
  21. That is totally the Zelda I've been wanting to see, except it's not Zelda. They did it right and if possible, I'll be buying this game. It's only for PS3 though?
  22. Yeah, I had a lot of issues with the controller until I bought my Hori. It's well worth it if you play a lot, Atik.
  23. I play a crapload of SFIV. Our friends have a tournament every weekend(usually) and we're thinking of heading to more actual tourneys to fight real players. My experience with SFIV has been so-so, I love it but hate it and I'm hoping this one will be what SFIV should have been from the start. I don't like that I'll essentially have to pay for it all over again, but maybe it will be worth it for someone who plays as much as I do. Hope your move goes well, Thor. Sucks you won't be around as much for a while.
